Titanium sponge

Titanium sponge

Sponge titanium is the basic raw material for the titanium industry. It is porous sponge-like metallic titanium produced from titanium ore through chlorination and reduction, with a purity of typically 98.5%-99.8%. It is the core intermediate product for the production of titanium alloys and titanium materials.

Using rutile (TiO₂) or ilmenite as raw materials, titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄) is generated through chlorination, and then porous pure titanium, commonly known as "sponge titanium", is obtained through reduction with magnesium.

Appearance: light gray/silver gray, loose and porous, blocky/granular, with a clean surface and no obvious impurities.

Essence: Industrial pure titanium is the sole initial raw material for titanium materials, titanium alloys, titanium powder, and titanium components.

Product characteristics:

1. Purity and impurity purity:

98.5%-99.8% (level 0 is the highest, level 5 is the lowest). Total impurity content: 0.2%-1.5%, mainly including oxygen, iron, silicon, chlorine, carbon, etc. Oxygen content: 0.06%-0.20%, directly affecting the strength and plasticity of titanium materials.

2. Physical properties:

Apparent density: 1.6-1.8 g/cm² (significantly lower than that of dense titanium, which is 4.51 g/cm³). Brinell hardness (HB): 100-157, increasing as purity decreases.

Melting point: 1668℃, excellent resistance to high and low temperatures (-253℃).

3. Material Advantages High Strength and Low Density:

Its strength is comparable to steel, yet its density is only 60% of steel, making it the preferred choice for lightweight applications. Superior Corrosion Resistance: It exhibits excellent stability in seawater, chlor-alkali, and acid-base environments, outperforming stainless steel. Good Biocompatibility: It is non-toxic and non-rejection, making it suitable for medical implant applications.

Easy processing: The porous structure facilitates subsequent melting, forging, and rolling.
