The main crystalline phase of casting grade brown fused alumina sand/flour is α-Al2O3. Brown fused alumina has high hardness, high melting point, high thermal conductivity, stable volume at high temperatures, low cracking tendency, and good acid and alkali resistance. It can be used as a surface shell material in lost wax precision casting of ordinary alloy steel, carbon steel, and large steel castings.
